I agree the piece is likely a castor cup. Some of those Victorian parlor chairs were impractically small at their feet. My parents have one around that you'd swear was intended for aesthetics only - its feet being no larger than 5/8" in diametre.

I would not think they would have made a furniture leg cup out of glass for fear that they would crack. I have dug and seen similar in clear glass that I was told were for salt and pepper...the pinch method over the shaker

Do you think there should be some wear on the bottom?

I guess I think it is too cool of an object to put on the floor under furniture. I think it belongs in the kitchen for some sort of use there. But then black amethest is sorta my downfall.

Here's my theory.. these were used under furniture which had wheels (casters) attached to the bottoms of the legs.. some antique chairs and small tables had little wheels built onto them, and they would have left quite a mark on a carpet.. these things shielded the carpet from the wheels. Even if there were no wheels, the bottoms of the legs would crunch up a carpet much worse without these protectors. This arrangement was not for daily use of the furniture, it was employed in the "do not touch" part of the home.. the "museum room" so to speak..
