Wine or water bottles?

I have two bottles that are either wine or water bottles. I get two different replies.They were painted by my greatgrand mother to remind her of Sweden. My greatgrand father acquired them in California in the late 1890'S

Hello,The most common term used is "Dutch gin" but they could hold anything, I have seen labelled water also. I can't make out enough letters to make a guess.

there is most likely a of German origin and was made for the mineral water tread , but as cowseatmaize has mentioned this bottles were sent to Holland were they were filled with gin. they where produced from the 1850s to the 1920s.in this style.

Thanks. My impression of the family story is changing. The church image look like the church in Skatelov, Sweden. My grandgrand parents lived in the region. These bottles were very important to them. Bet, They brought them from Sweden.

Looks like the impression on it says Apollinaris in the circular portion. I might be reading it wrong.
