I was out visiting a few wineries and antique stores over the weekend. I ended up with way more wine than antiques, but I did have one really nice find. Here it is, an 1858 ground lip colorless quart.[attachment=Clear 1858 1-1.jpg][attachment=Clear 1858 5-1.jpg]

Take a closer look at that lid. I got this jar with lid for $17. It has one of the nicest sun-moon-star lids that I've seen in a while. Notice the "A" in Mason is missing its crossbar. I came home pretty happy![attachment=Clear 1858 1-2.jpg][attachment=Clear 1858 4-1.jpg]

Please remind me which 1858 that lid is correct for.

There are quite a few 1858's that this lid goes on. The Christmas Masons are often found with a lid like this, and Redbook 1919 and 1919-1.

I was just trying to catalogue this jar and see that it is a little unusual. This looks like Redbook #1789 to me. Can someone confirm? It does not have an S after Mason like the 1858's typically do (Mason's Patent...) and Mason is slightly off center to the left of the word Patent.

Very nice jar! Good find! And that is a great looking lid, wow. Myself, I feel that the earlier jars that are clear are undervalued. Colorless glass was much harder to find "back in the days". Much more expensive to make, and usually the only time it was made was for druggist and food packers....they were afraid that the color of the glass would give their food or other product an "unwholesome" look. And of course, waste not want not, they used what batch was left after the end of a customers order and make some jars or other items.... I like the clear older jars.... David

Great looking example of that particular zinc lid & a very nice jar as well. True colorless 1858's aren't that easily found.
