All I can find these days are Native American relics, I have spots on local rivers that I frequently hunt hoping to find bottles, but more often I find points, shards, grinders, scrapers, tomahawk heads, awls, knapping stones, etc. I really am surprised that no one else appears to know about the areas I am searching as they are right in the middle of civilization. The relics are cool, but I am starving for bottles. Think I'll take a walk at lunch and see what I can find...
Cool finds Doug. The big one with the tip busted off would have been a nice Cobbs. They are more of a knife than an arrowhead and date back to archaic times (around 8,000 years ago). The smaller one looks to be archaic as well. If the base is ground down smooth then it definatly is. It's difficult to type but it could be a little Kirk or Palmer. Here's one I found a few weeks back when I got the chance to sneak off for a hunt after work one evening.
Here's one that I found back in 03. It really is the "find of a lifetime" to be able to pull one out of the ground like this! I've turned down some big bucks for this one and don't plan on letting it go any time soon. Heck, I'd sell Every bottle I have before I'd sell this old rock!!!
Thanks for the help on the points Chris & Roaddog.I found both in Central Ohio Roaddog. Those are some killer points DWS and Chris posted. Thanks again,Doug
E, Right in the middle of civilization often goes unnoticed. My last 3 or 4 decent dumps have been in the most obvious spots but somehow no one had ever checked.Good luck finding some glass.
Let me know if you are ever coming down this way (Richmond, Va), I will take you to the spots. I searched the area a few days back and found three decent-sized shards, all cord-marked pottery. No points or tools this time, but area is constantly turning over.
Find of the day was a quarter-sized coin with a large eagle surrounded by stars. I got awfully excited as my old eyes struggled to figure what sort of coin I had - I turned it over to see "Not Redeemable for Cash" stamped on the obverse = a Chuck E Cheese game token.
Still bottle hungry - yes: will trade relic site leads for bottle-digging prospects.
