Found an interesting bottle today. It has the body style of a Hutch but looks to have been sealed with a lightning stopper.

I have this kind of Hutchinson bottle morphology going on in the display cabinet now...

Hutchiison bottles with the slightly elongated neck are common in the north east, maybe other areas too, but I can't remember ever seeing one with anything other than the patent spring stopper. I always assumed they could have accommodated the Putnam, lightening or Hutter closures but after fifty years collecting never found any proof?

Looks similar in shape & style of my unknow cobalt blue Norris I posted & pictured in here a few months back. Which I called a Hutch but it's authenticity as a hutch was questioned. maybe it was, maybe it's not. I think as these bottles were reused throughout the years they were fitted with different types of closures. would not be surprised if this type of bottle found to be original with more then 1 type of closure, just speculation though. Leon.

I can understand how a collector might think those bottles used multiple closure types. But, never saw an example. I suspect Hutchinson spring closure bottles were efficient and satisfied bottlers needs. The spring stopper would have been cheaper too. Once introduced they became an almost instant success and to my knowledge there was never a followup improvement to the patent. The last commerically produced Hutchinson was made by Owens Illinois Glass Company in 1929.

maybe true but it wasn't the hutchinson spring closure bottles that were efficient but the stopper itself that was. not all soda bottles produced in the 1880's & 90's were Hutchinson bottles with Hutchinson stoppers. so, like you said, if the spring stopper was cheaper then why not use it on your non hutchinson bottle? like a gravitating stopper type bottle with a hutch stopper in it which I've dug in bottom of privies before. As far as I know, even though no patent improvements in the hutch stopper it did come in different lenght or sizes. Leon.

I looked closely at a few of my Hutchinsons comparing them to blob 7 inch soda bottles with similar bodies. What stuck out was Hutchinson bottles to accomodate the rubber gasket on the stopper had a very prononced shoulder, the other bottles though somewhat similar all had more sloping shoulders. It was obvvious a spring stopper would not seal correctly in anything but a standard Hutchison bottle. I'm sure bottlers found this out quickly.

both of these were found with hutchinson Stoppers. I don't have pics of the one when found because that was 15 years ago & 4 computers ago. I had a 3rd one with same Hutchinson Stopper. I've had people tell me both of these were not hutch bottles but had hutch stoppers when found. Lets see the ones you dug? Leon.

Onikowski, Trenton NJ - typical Hutchinson style pronounced shoulder, short neck, Daniel Sullivan, Hutchison with slightly elongated neck, Star Bottling Trenton soda with extended neck. Sullivan has original spring stopper , Star bottle often found with Putnam closure, never spring closure.
