^^ and there you have it. There is not much more that can be learned about glassmaking techniques than has already been documented, at least not here in the states. It went through a radical change from 1840s to 1920s. All methods have been well documented, discussed, archived, etc etc. Anything...
in a bottle of this age, the embossing was made by inserting a metal plate inside the mold. On the third photo, I see a mold seem, very faint, then i see that other line that runs through the neck. I wonder if that the outline of the metal plate, and the plate was made to fill one half of the...
I personally like when archeologists post their techniques and conjecture. Thanks for the free archeology lesson. As I mentioned Im going to get my degree... and im taking all of you with me. Archeology should not be some "secret club". History belongs to everyone, How many pieces of broken...
Archeologists: I'm reminded of the opening scene in Indiana Jones Last Crusade where he's fighting the guy and recovers the artifact stating
"This belongs in a museum"
Not every little thing belongs in a museum. Many things can be learned from excavating historical sites. But sadly, those...
I also research property records. My mom is a real estate agent so she has given me tools :) other structures around the area are from the turn of the century. I also like to get ahold of demolition reports. Lists of properties scheduled for demolition. Those are usually good. I can't stress...
It's in a rural site in nc. The area has been populated since the revolutionary war, so even if the last recorded structure on the property dates 1920, that doesn't mean much to me. Who knows if there was another structure before? I started scratching the ash pit with my fork and found lots of...
I find it ironic that they hate diggers yet thanks for making your research public for us!!
I'm actually getting a grant to go back to school to be an archeologist. I know they have reasons for excavating things the way they do, but honestly I personally believe history belongs to all people...
Ok thanks. I know not to go alone. I'm too scared to attempt something of this magnitude. That is not how I would want to die. In someone's old toilet. (I will say if that did happen I can guarantee they would have to pry any bottles I found from my cold dead hand! Lol)
So do you think I...
I'm hesitant to dig this hole because the pit follows the 1930 sanitation code. HOWEVER. The old pit next to it had some household trash and ashy soil. I'm imagining that was the pit before they moved it over. And there's another spot my detector found under an old oak tree, not on the creek but...
The outhouse would have been about 50 feet downwind from the house. In several places. In a house that old there should be several pits. I can sometimes feel the difference under my feet when I walk over an abandoned pit. If you can't find it on the map. Get a metal detector.
And as far as...
It is good. Any time you have engraving like that, it's pre-1910. Judging by that tooled finish (or what I can see, I would date it to the 1880s. It's a nice prescription bottle.
Sadly I'm moving from the area soon. I only recently started digging at a site near my house. I barely scratched the surface with 1930s bottles. I would like to pass on the location to anyone interested. In lawrenceville ga.
