I'd have to ask you to open it to be sure, but it looks to me to be a transformer in a porcelain casing. Most likely to operate a low voltage bell or chime.

I also have about 45 circa 1900's - 1940's labeled syrums, cures, pills, drugs, linaments etc with full or partial contents and good original labels.
