    Question on early Lightning jars

RB #1500 with the HWP reverse is generally accepted as the earliest Lightning. This variation has mold numbers in the 1 to 7 range, and the mold numbers for the regular #1489's seem to start where these leave off and continue on into the hundreds.

    Steve Mertz

I am sorry to say that Steve Mertz has passed away. His friends in the hobby know that Steve has fought a long battle with cancer. His son Jonah brought him to Muncie in January, but Steve was not well enough to stay for the actual jar show. I think Steve's passion for Mason jar collecting...

    John Hathaway

I regret to announce that John Hathaway has passed away. John Hathaway has been retired for several years, but long-time jar collectors fondly remember his "Maine Idea" fruit jar sales. In addition to setting up at many shows, John would send out a sales list to about 600 collectors every other...

Vivian "Granny Kath's" Kitchen Book info wanted

Most of the jars reported in Granny Kath's Kitchen have been included in later editions of the Red Book. Nonetheless, a copy of Granny's columns provides a huge amount of useful supplementary information. Her husband Curtis compiled the columns into a set of books after she died, and he...

    Mason's III Patent Nov. 30th 1858 GREEN

Thank you for your post, MNJars. For whatever it's worth, Mason jar collectors generally seem to have difficulty telling the 1's from the I's. Anyone trying to collect an alphabet set with the different letters below MASON'S soon finds that there is no unambiguous letter I. There are plenty...

    Mason's III Patent Nov. 30th 1858 GREEN

I've held examples of the supposed III and 111 quarts next to each other and decided they were made in the same mold. The stronger embossed examples often get pegged as III and the weakly embossed ones as 111. I tend to agree that 2042 is the more correct listing and would favor getting rid of...

    Mason's III Patent Nov. 30th 1858 GREEN

Doug Leybourne just put out a new Red Book 11, but I do not yet have a copy. The old book 10 listed both 2042 and 2117 (Roman numeral III and 111) even though these are just two ways of describing the same jar. I believe that the 2042 listing reflected more up-to-date prices than 2117 in book...

    Reversed N's and nice lid

I can virtually guarantee that Ball made these jars with the backwards N's. Some examples have a slug plate circle on either the front or back, and you can match up the mold numbers to earlier BBGMCo monogram jars made in the same molds. Jim Sears

    I have a sudden interest.

This seems like an excellent time to start collecting jars. A few great jars are bringing record prices, but most good jars are getting very little attention right now. In the last year I have seen several nice amber Globe jars (particularly the pints) sell at prices that would have been...

    Georgeoj will be missed

George looked for beauty rather than money in his jars and he shared the joy he found with others in the hobby. He will be missed. Jim Sears

Jar Display @ K-zoo Bottle Show April 13

George, I'm sorry I couldn't make the show. Do you have a photo of the display to post? I appreciated seeing the photo of Don's table. I can make out some nice 1858's including the dark amber CFJCo, and the Fink & Nasse, and a DuPont.... Jim

    My new jar

Hi Paul, I'm sorry I had to miss the K'zoo show, but unfortunately my Michigan trip had to be a week earlier. That trip did include a nice visit with the former owner of the Root, who said that he was hoping to see some happy collectors at his table. I'm very glad to hear that you are...

    Smooth lip midget

I have owned examples of this jar with mold numbers B6R and B9M and also one with an unmarked base. The B9L is a new one too me, but I doubt there were too many more molds because the jars really do seem quite scarce. I know one was dug in Alexandria, VA, but I have never found any information...

    Cornflower Blue or Blue

While I think that "blue" is a fair description for this color, it really is pretty much the same as things that Doug calls "cornflower" elsewhere in the Red Book. Despite the impression you may have gotten from the price guide, this shade is much, much rarer than greenish-aqua for the American...

    Inherited jar collection for sale

Please give us some idea where these jars are. I am always interested in buying jars in my area, but it's much more difficult to make a deal on a collection that happens to be on the other side of the country. I live in the Washington, DC area and will drive to Michigan at Christmas. If...

Jar Collection - How to sell?

Well, I'm certainly still actively collecting ground mouth Mason jars, but apparently I haven't been in this forum in quite a while. I always appreciate hearing about unusual variations such as the numbered and lettered 1858s that may be for sale. I'll try to check in here a bit more...

    blue

I don't recall a good blue CFJ blue midget on Ebay. If you dig up the photo, I'd like to see it. These midgets do exist in a deep cornflower or light cobalt. Here is another Darrell Plank link for his blue midget CFJ reverse. http://www.darrellplank.com/jars/Pics/blumidgt.jpg Jim

    blue

The only known original cobalt CFJCo is actually a Mason's Improved jar rather than the Mason's Patent 1858 variation. It did indeed sell for well over $10,000. It can be seen in the middle of Darrell Plank's amazing shelf of blue jars at www.darrellplank.com. The blue 1858 that was dug a...

    Real or Reproduction?

Well, it's certainly a real jar, but the color doesn't look original. When selenium is used to manufacture glass that is clear instead of aqua, then irradiation will turn the glass smokey amber. This one looks "nuked" to me. Jim Sears

Look what the post woman brought today!

Congratulations on the IGCo midget. I think I was the underbidder on that one. I already have one from the same mold, but I couldn't resist sticking in a bid when I saw it listed on Ebay as a regular CFJCo. Jim
