This is our 1st dig of the new year. My digging partner had got the permission some time back and we decided to go and check it out.
The 1st spot we found on the property probed real nice and looked like a good one to start. So we said let's open it up and see what it looks like. A foot down we were hitting ash and then another 2 feet down we started to hit some trash circ 1880/1910.
Then i thought it should start to get older and was praying that it would. This layer of trash that we were in was producing alot of broken chamber pots, cups, hutch tops, tall blobs, and a few pontiled shards. Another 2 feet under this layer, i pulled out the 1st sign of hope. Yes it's a blue james wise form Allentown pa but it was broke in half. The next one was also a blue james wise and it was a whole one and that led to many more.
To sum things up the temp was in the low 20's and the privy was 5x10 and 7 feef deep and very wet and smelled really bad. We would of liked to dug this one in one day but we spent 4 half days due to the temp and water that just kept comming into the pit. Every morning when we came back to dig we found that the pit was full of smelly soupy water. But looking at the finds i would say that persistence pays off.
