Here is another old shard we dug that I am curious to learn more about? This one was also dug from a Baltimore, Maryand privy, and remains a mystery to me. It is the bottom section of an aqua, round bottomed, open or rather scar pontiled bottle. It has four embossed panels, seperated by four smaller unembossed panels. The only thing remaining on the panel in the first photo is "....NIA", which is the only reason I think it might have been from Virginia?

On this panel all that remains from the first line of embossng is ".....S'S", and on the line below it, all that remains looks to be the one letter ".....M"

Photo of pontil scar. Anyone familiar with this bottle, or know what type of lip it would have had? thanks.

Very cool bottle.
I have no idea. It has panels like Swaims type medicines. I have never heard of a round bottom hair bottle.
I doubt the place is VIRGINIA , more likely that is a word part of the name. Almost all early VA bottles use the VA abbreviation.
THe phrases like "Warranted to grow hair" were pretty common around the 1850s.
Here is a typical ad...

A fairly thorough search of Don Fadely's book, "Hair Raising Stories", did not turn up anything that might fit. I will look further into the text to see if I can come up with something. I am sure that you have a scarce to rare bottle that would be worth a bundle if complete. The way it is it would be worth a fair amount to a collector of hair product bottles / items.

From looking at your pictures I believe the bottle is not much larger than the shard, but it sure would be neat to see the rest of it.

Please keep us informed if you find out more information.
