I found this bottle on the river bank while metal detecting. I collect old bottles, but have never found one like this before. It is a black glass bottle measuring 8 1/2" tall by 4 1/2" wide. In my opinion, it is dark olive green when light is applied. I am not too interested in cleaning the bottle too much. I feel it adds charm to the bottle. Any opinions on wether I should clean the bottle further or leave it the way I found it. I believe it is mallet shaped because it is too short to be cylinder shaped. It has a deep sand pontil on the bottom. The bottom is not perfectly flat and does not sit sqaure on a flat surface. The lip appears to be flared with an applied rim that is very crude and thick. I have had problems finding pictures of another bottle with the same lip on the internet. This bottle has no cracks, chips, or nicks in it. There appears to be twist marks in the neck which leans slightly to one side. Opinions on the date and any information on the lip would be greatly appreciated. Although I am not interested in selling this bottle, I would like to know what the bottle is worth. To me, I believe there should be some historical value to this bottle. It's hard to believe too many of these could be found in this condition other than items divers find in ship wrecks.

Does it look like any of these? These bottles pictured all date around 1740-1760

that is a very nice find and looks like an english mallet dating 1750's-1760s. I wouldnt clean it any more either, that really old glass looks great with that patina.

Take care

Hey Timekiller,
Really early and crude bottle you found. Nice. I'm not sure of the value but it is collectible and people will pay to aquire them. I LOVE the patena. Not only is it part of the unique history of that bottle - but it is super cool.
