Hi, I have this old liquor bottle. I've been told its been passed down since the mid 19th century, but I know nothing about it. Only markings are a "28" (discreetly etched into cap) and a "40" (small mark on bottle). Any help is greatly appreciated! Thanks,Phil [attachment=20140611_123051 (597x1024).jpg] [attachment=20140611_123117 (652x1024).jpg] [attachment=20140611_123128 (1024x576).jpg]

Sorry can't help you, not a Packers fan. [:D] I guess I'll let it slide this time... I see an etched letter, an "S" maybe?A close pic of the seams near the neck and a clear pic of the base will help to determine if this is old or just modern glass.

The handle looks well done and it reminds me of a Chestnut Grove whiskey but I've never seen a clear decanter style. Some dimensions and overall more description is needed and a few clearer pictures. The mystery "s" I can't tell if is just camera glare. One thing about the "I've been told" bits of family history is they are sometimes wrong and often exaggerated. Don't be disappointed if the outcome isn't as you expect.

Well Phil, I have a projec5 going to study the tools used to apply handles. I also have some containers like yours and I have to ask some questions about the glass forming details. First of all is the stopper solid or is it blown. If it is blown how was the bottom of the stem closed to keep liquids out of it?Secondly, is there any twist in the neck glass under the finish? I doubt if there is.Third one. is there two press bar marks on the lower end of the handle application? That embossed "S" appears to be in a circular plate type of circle. Is it? RED Matthews

Looks like a genuine old whiskey bottle, could very well be from the 19 century.

That looks like a polished pontil. I think they were a bit later than 1850. It's a nice piece but I don't think I would put it before 1900 from the pictures. Maybe if that's a fancy "S" for Seagram's the mark can be dated but that just a guess.

Well if it is for sale - please let me know. I would like to include it in my jug handle project. I saved your pictures, but am trying to get a good collection of them. RED M.

The S could have been the first initial of the owners name..may have held brandy .. cool looking handle! Very fancy looking and I would think it was a bottle of some one that had a bit of money..just my opinion and you know what they are worth!! JAMIE
