Dug a 13 foot privy here in Tucson last month and found this one; anyone ever seen one of these? Thanks in advance for any help, Karl

Thanks Cyberdigger; it was a very good day. Trying to find the store in the local directory at the library. My guess is around 1890 ish......

Had to remove an entire cast iron stove at 5 feet; slowed me down a lot.....

Found about 70 bottles in the pit; here is group picture; the blue medicine is cool and reads "APOTHECARIES HALL SAN FRANCISCO".

Hey Karl,

Welcome to A-BN. What took ya! That's a great pumpkin, Charlie Brown.[8D]

I did find this listing, "FELIX & CO., D., (D. Felix & C. F. Wilkins), grocers, 109

Congress st." in the 1881 Tucson Directory.

Don't know if they were related, but there were not many Wilkins in Tucson at that time.

Hi Karl,

Get in contact with Ralph Van Brocklin, an expert in Western flasks of all kinds. His email is thegenuine@comcast.net. I made his email public because I found it on the FOHBC website page experts page.

He should have some ideas on it.

Great finds!

Hey Karl:

That is a terrific haul. I can tell you that 'seed is a VERY GOOD flask and Ralph is the guy to tell you just HOW good. If you make it available take your time.

Would like to dig a pit like that again. Those were the good ole days.

Welcome and thanks for sharing.
Surface always amazes me with research. It's got to be a relative.
I have a question about one. Is it one of those turn mold cobalt beers? Second to last row, two in.
I've been Rufusized.[:D]

Karl,

Just did a little surface digging...(research that is) and found this article by Michael Miller called Grand Canyon Glass from 2005 and he says:

"Arizona territory was ripe with dance halls and saloons, it seems that very few of them took the time or expense to emboss their names on to bottles. To date only five different bottles have surfaced, and all but one of these are very rare."

Now five years have passed since that article but I would assume that you have a pretty darn valueable flask on your hands. Let us know what you find out. Great Score! Woo Hoo for you!
