Bear Bottle-1800's?

I just purchased a bear bottle yesterday--it appears to be old and I found one like it by doing a Google search on a Texas archeological web site. They showed a good picture of one just like the one I purchased and stated it was from the 1800's, but i still don't know much about it-I am wondering what this bottle was used for, the age, it's value to collectors (eg is it common or unusual) I do not have a picture to post
I look forward to hearing more about this bottle if you can enlighten me

I believe these are called Kummel bears.

Thanks for the info, using the name of Kummel bear I was able to go back to some earlier forum postings when someone asked the same question as I did--so now I know that this bottle is from after 1900. I guess it is not too uncommon, but nevertheless, I think it is a great bottle and a great find ( i paid $3)

Hey Folks...

Kummel is a sweet liquer flavored with, among other seeds and herbs, caraway...

I believe there are some that show deep amethyst when light is able to pass thru them...

There are even aqua ones and some were made into the early 20th century...
