Hi Blackglass,

I am by no means an expert on pontils...but it looks to me like there is a clear irregular ring. I can take additional pics to show this, but not at the moment.

What would the date be assuming it it pontiled?

Thanks,

ChrisP

Nice ale bottle! I don't see any pontil, the ring is probably from the bottle mold or a tool they used on it. The shape makes it look older than it is, the lip style (called a double collar) gives away the age. Keep your eyes peeled for more!

This bottle is English and dates around 1880- 1900 and would have held whisky although the shape is very similar to the Benedectine bottles.

I was told it was French, and as others have said, dates to around 1900 give or take 10 years. The form was used for a long time, so there's older and newer ones. The newer ones have an embossed crescent on the shoulder, which leads me to believe they may have been for this brand.

Definitely British and most certainly from the 1880's -90's. I would say very likely a Liqueur by the shape, like, as mentioned like a Benedictine.
