I had a food bottle kill itself once. I put it on my shelf, and the next day I picked it up and the bottom stayed there. I also have some cracked bottles that appear to have begun to heal themselves? Glass moves very slowly, so it is theoretically possible...
bottles with patches of contaminated glass can have so much stress in the glass that it doesnt take much for them to shatter. Even a quick temperature change. I had that happen on a good one not long ago.[]
You could probably use a holographic interference pattern to see the stress. Would be an interesting experiment.
