I ran across this Soda in a recent antique store hunt in Pennsylvania and found this. It reads J Sloan Philadelphia and on the back it reads Brown stout. It also has some amber swirls throughout. Anyone got info on it? I paid $20 for it.

Nice find. From the picture of the base,it is not pontilled but probably dates 1860-70's.Very nice bottle, regardless and easily worth more than $20.You mentioned the mold seams and dating. That is one of the biggest myths in bottle collecting. The seam on a bottle can ONLY tell someone if a bottle is handblown or made in a machine. Many of the early bottle books and still some modern price guides show this method of dating but it is widely accepted as false. Many pontilled(pre-1860) have seams that go to the top and many 1890's bottles have seams that stop at the shoulder.I,too fell victim to these inaccuracies and didn't learn the facts until a couple years into collecting.Don't mean to be so blunt, just want to help.Take care,Doug
