Burned out house revisted.

Construction crew tore down the cynder block garage behind house. In the hole & dirt piles left behind was a pile of bottles just laying everywhere. Picked many bottles up off of surface. Looked like whole yard was built on a dump. LEON.

Hello Leon. Seeing as how Detroit is a really old city re USA standards. You should try to find some of the old alderman or city council records that should go back to the 1870s or so. A lot of the council or alderman meetings had to do with the sites and runnings of the old city dumps. That what we did for Stockton and Sacramento here in Cali back in the day. found most of the city dumpsites, and dug all that were not covered by buildings, and went in a basement of one and dug it anyway. Paid the owner by having the floor paved with concrete, cost about 500.00 dollars, and got several thousand dollars worth of bottles out from under that place. lots of old western whiskeys came out of the dump..........Andy

Interesting, Thanks for the tip. From looking at my 1897 Sanborn maps I think the whole area is a huge dump but unfortunately post 1900. Have found some Blob Tops nearby in what I think is part of the same dump.

You might luck out, and find an area of that dump that goes back before 1900, sometimes the old records will state how the different dump sites were filled in, and wether they were draglined or burned occasionally. sometimes they will tell you when the dumps were started and finally filled over. if it is a large area it mat have been used for many years........Andy
