OK, I agree it has been around for longer. Many products with the word "Colombian" were. It doesn't date the bottle bottle though. I still say later than 1866. Good find on the ad though.

I never thought that either Jim. That's why I gave it such a wide age range (from the picture I saw). If you can get it for $20 go for it but it's still a gamble. I don't know it it's broken in two and glued together.

Hey Jim,

Great research on the ad!

Eric, you're getting pretty accomplished with your scissors.

In what I've learned, so far, "W.T. Shufeldt was the successor to.." and perhaps succeded by Croskey, "The leading and most extensive one is that of A. S. Croskey. This house,
which was formerly W. S. Shufeldt & Co., was among the first to open this business
in this city, having commenced here in 1856."

I, too, do not believe this bottle has anything to do with the 1893 Columbian Exposition. Though that one brand, "White City" that Jim posted from the Chicago Distilling Co. may have. The Exhibition was neicknamed "White City."

I feel fortunate, when researching a bottle, to find any kind of good information at all. I've seen Shufeldt as both "W.T." and "W. S." and there is a Henry H. Shufelt, distiller that may or may not have been connected to the firm.

We don't think of Lady Columbia as much these days, as Americans once did. She seems to have slipped in representation via Lady Liberty.

"Unique patriotic theme (Fourth of July, Lady Liberty, Lady Columbia) 1885 Victorian trade card advertising Gunnison & Son "Electric Brand" Shirts, Gents' and Ladies Collars, and Cuffs. Also shows trademark of "Electric Brand" which is hand hold electricity bolts." From Reggie.

Come on, Richard, we're looking forward to those photos...
