I came across this thatch/wicker clad demijohn at an antique mall. It's pontiled and has some base wear so it appears old. The lip seems unusual for a demijohn. It is also very light weight. I find the old demijohns to be generally quite heavy.

I haven't bought it yet. I just wanted to get people's thoughts on it, like where do you think it was made and is it actually old? Thanks!

It looks like more of a rope wrap and the lip isn't a a regular late style type. Are the full size pics any better?

Yeah, it's not wicker. It's more of a thatch material, or perhaps rope wrap as you describe it (I'm not familiar with that material). The full size picks aren't much better (the lighting wasn't great). Is there something in particular you need a better shot of?

Looks like a an early European bottle, usually German. It is common to see these early ones with braided hay/straw covers. Most I have seen have been cylinders and those types of lips are what you normally see on them. I have been trying to get one for awhile but the shipping from Europe is killer. Nice find.

Hello Dan, It looks good to me. I have no idea of what they want for it, but it is different from the normal demi's I know and have. No doubt it was made for a different use than just shipping liquid. It looks more like a medical fluid application. Values are not known. RED Matthews

This is a poor pic but it shows an cylinder example. Photo is from the German National Pharmacy Museum.

I'd grab it if it isn't unreasonably priced just because it's old and cool looking. I'm cheap though, so I'd probably stop at $30.

I am trying to remember the last few I have seen on Germany eBay and I think they usually go for over 50euro, about $65 +
Then the shipping is about 35-40 euro...which is why there is not one in my collection yet!
