Me again, Here is the second Dr. Wistar's bottle had questions about. Is this a sand Pontil? I.B. (Isaac Butt proprietor 1844-1845) is embossed on this bottle so was wondering if you can date the bottle to 44-45 or was IB used after he sold out? Thanks!

Hi, I don't know the history of the Wistars meds but that one is a smooth base, so it is likely newer.

Thanks! So smooth base hing mold. I need to look up the years this type was used. Guess what's throwing me off is the seams stop at the base of the neck, has a crude applied tapered lip and the embossing I.B. All pointing to 1840-1860 is this right?

Hello CazDigger, I like your bottle. I would like to know about all the embossed lettering. For example: "/ DR. WISTAR'S " "/ BALSA'M OF " what else is embossed.on the vertical panels. I think the bottom bears a little more analysis, regarding the characteristics of it. We also need an angular picture of the finish, to evaluate the applied glass or the formation of the finish. The description of the mold seams up the neck and the markings of a possibility of a tooled finish glass.
Thanks for showing us what you have - but we need a little more information and description. It is also apparent that it was made in a two part leaf mold with a bottom hinged system. RED Matthews

Sorry every one. I sure messed this up. I looked at my notes and picked up CazDigger somehow from another note. Sometimes I think I am loosing it.
Anyway I have given some attention to both of akshorey's threads of his bottles.
I guess no harm is done - just my old age slipping into what I am tryins to do. RED M.

Here is my take on it for what its worth..
Isaac Butts supposed sold out exclusively to Seth Fowle but there seemed to be some questions to his claims. If you look at Wistars ads in the later 1840s Flowle states the bottles are not authentic without the Isaac Butts makings. John D Parks was selling Wistars at the same time out west. There were a number of court battles.
I believe Fowle kept the IB markings for maybe 10 years after he aquired the business as sort of a sign that he was the "rightfull sucessor".
This would put your smooth base bottle around the late 1850s the time during which empontilling was transitioning to the snap case.

Thanks GuntherHess, I was reading the same stuff but wasn't sure of myself so good to get additional takes on it and hear what other think. Red (hope red is ok) here are some more pics of the base and neck.
