Picked this cd#230 (at least I think) at an estate sale along with an ivory shorty pool cue and some tools, I dont know alot about insulators other than as an offshoot of my mason jar collection as some of the glass houses made both. I loved the honey amber color and for a buck figured I couldn't go wrong. Any input on value etc would be appreciated.

You got yourself a great deal for a buck!! You're spot on with the CD and your example is one of the prettiest amber shades (IMO). Current book price for those is 30-40.

I think the D series insulators came about in the 1930s, after Owens-Illinois bought Hemingray in 1933. The Hemingray plant was in Muncie, Indiana, at the time.

Just last fall, a group of dedicated collectors, with help from the National Insulator Association, worked with the Indiana Historical Society to install a plaque on the Hemingray factory site in Muncie. Here's a photo:

it's got a date code above the hemingray, you can barely see it but it's there. It's usually pretty faint on 512's from what i've noticed.
Your's has uh 0-4, i belive that's 1934...(maybe) and if theres any dots after the 4 or in the general area it's 1 extra year for each dot. Without the date code i can tell you it's an older 512 from the 30's (though not really "old" in the insulator grand scheme), older 512's always have a bigger embossing like yours has. Newer ones have the "lowex" (pyrex rip off) embosing, and usually a much smaller, finer embossing. Some don't even say hemingray on them, just "512"... which is sort of interesting.
...also of some interesting whatever-ness, a lot of the carnival 512's usually have a really large and bold embossing, and they tend to be a little taller than other 512's. I have no idea why.

512's are really cool, lot's of nice colours and they can usually be had for pretty cheap. I've got a yellowISH one and a really dark carnival one, and while not a 512 i have an orange amberd-513 which is pretty cool (and i like to brag about it)

for $1 you won't do better anywhere else, great find and thanks for sharing!
