The girl and I took a walk along a set of railroad tracks and low and behold I found a broken hutchinson soda sticking out of the dirt. Even though it was broken I was still excited as I've never actually found a hutch. I hope to make it back after some of this freakin snow melts to see if I can find anything else. It's hard to tell from the pictures but this was just a plain slug plate soda. However, the lower bottom is embossed "E.H.E. Co. No. 1." Does anyone have any info on this?

That spot may have some good potential, hopefully you can exploit it adequately come spring.

From the glass factory marks page here is some info on the company that made the bottle:

E.H.E.CO..............Edward H. Everett Company (Newark Star Glass Works), Newark, OH (1880-1904). Plant merged in 1904 to become part of the Ohio Bottle Company and in 1905 part of the American Bottle Company. American was purchased by Owens Bottle Company in 1916, and in 1929 this plant became part of the merger that resulted in the formation of Owens-Illinois Glass Company. Also, see "S. K. & CO" and "N next to or within a star" marks.

I remember digging my first hutch quite well. I had just discovered the best dump of my life along a creek (didn't know it then), and spent several days digging along the far eastern end, where I was able to double the local bottles I owned (not many at the time). I walked west along the creek about 30 feet away and stuck my scratcher randomly in the side of the ravine bank, and immediately a perfect local hutch rolled out. Surprised the heck out of me but I grabbed it before it hit the creek. The refuse was over 3 feet thick in that spot, and it was great even though it was a TOC deposit. I had no idea that I would spend several years digging there, nor any idea how long and rich the refuse layer was. 2 buckets worth of glass and stoneware came home with me almost every time I went out in 2007.

Moral of the story is that where hutches are sticking out of the dirt, chances are good that you have found yourself a great spot to dig! Your girlfriend might get upset about you spending most of your time with old bottles, but what can ya do? Good luck man, I hope you hit the treasure trove!

Nice story! I wish I could only get so lucky. I hope to dig some privies this coming spring and get some oldies! Not many bottle diggers or collectors in my town. Which is better for me I guess. [:)] Thanks for the info on the hutch btw! Very interesting stuff. Believe it or not my girl actually tags along just about every time I go bottle hunting. However, I haven't been able to get a shovel to fit in her hand. [:-] "You get all dirty digging you know." [;)] Thanks again.

Hey, Bryan!

Any luck finding insulators along that rail line? Those are kind of my thing, and I'd love to hear if you turned any up!
All the best,

Indianabottledigger, I will be at the Columbus show so maybe I'll see you there!

There is no other embossing on the hutch unfortunately.

Sergiowilkins, I saw a lot of broken insulators but didn't bring them home as most were in pretty poor shape. I will keep an eye out for whole ones though and keep you in mind.

Thanks for the replies.

Could be a fluke, could be worth rechecking the area. I've read stories about waterstops along a train route being the place where everyone threw their trash out the window of the train. Once this snow slacks off, we should go dig something.
