Hey everybody. I signed up to get more info on the bottle I found last week. From the many hours of searching I have done online, I gather this is a Baltimore Glass Works GVI-4 Flask. It says "Corn for the World" with a raised ear of corn on the front and "Baltimore" with a tall building on the back. It is amber in color, ~8.75 inches tall, and is a quart in volume. It has a smooth base and an "applied double collared" mouth.
Because of the smooth base, I read it was probably made post-civil war (1870?).

I am not a bottle collector (though I found a Codd bottle on a WWI shipwreck near St. Vincent). I will likely sell or auction this bottle and was wondering what sort of price range this flask may bring? Is there one site better to auction bottles off than another? Thanks for any help.

James

James,
You can do the eBay thing or let an expert handle it for you.
Personally, I like the CADILLAC service that John Pastor offers. He knows everyone who is someone in the glass hobby. He takes your item (to be auctioned) to many venues, puts it on display (under a secure, see-through cover), talks it up and does a comprehensive research/writeup on the item. John has a reputation for being as honest as the day is long.
He might not have as big of an auction house as some of the others, but I like his ATTITUDE and accessibility.
Give his site a look-see and contact him if you like what you read/see. I have a flask on the June 1st auction.

Good luck!

There are several very good auctions. I live in MA so if I were ever lucky enough to find something like that I would probably use Norman Heckler because he's very good and nearby. No worry about mail if you can take it directly to them.

The ID sounds correct, the color is good and that lip may boost it some. I won't speak to condition without seeing it but that's a big factor.

Thanks very much to everyone for taking the time to answer me. This appears to be a good one to have found intact.

There is a local bottle show next weekend in Raleigh, at the State Fairgrounds. I may take the bottle there and see what they have to say about it.

Nice find James. The value of a Corn For the World flask is based entirely upon color and condition. An example in aqua might fetch only a couple of hundred dollars, a yellow example several thousand, a prussian blue specimen $20K or more and a purple example (there are only three of them) 75K or more. From the photos it appears that yours is a dark amber which is viewed by collectors as better than aqua but not as desirable as yellow. The current marketplace is tough to predict but my sense is that you are looking at an $800 to $1200 as long as there is no damage of significance.
