This is fascinating, I never really put too much thought into the real details of bottle making like this. You describe the problems encountered in using the ABM machines, but it sounds like the hand blown methods would encounter the same problems. They would want to make the sides thick enough to be strong, but yet they don`t want to use too much glass either, the thicker they made the bottles, the less bottles they could make out of that batch. I would think that they would also have problems then with weak shoulders and base corners in the rectangular bottles. I guess that there really was a real science to the art of glass blowing when it came to bottles!
