We moved into a new house last winter and after the snow melted and we started to explore the yard, we came upon a hidden gold mine of old bottles and tin cans in the woods near the road. These are some of the ones that were still intact. Any ideas on how old they are and what they were originally originally used for? The little one I am most interested in thank you!!

That first one is a Hiram Walker whiskey. I've found several in a couple different sizes in Peoria from the 1930's. I'm guessing that's all 1920's-40's. I'd get digging where you're finding those. I bet you'll find some nice whole milks and sodas.

Wow thank you!! That didn't take long at all to get some good info! I will get digging some more (I have other bottles too but haven't cleaned them up yet). I'll post those later! Thanks again!

Unfortunately nothing of value I don't think. All the cans are completely rusted and look like old soup cans. There's some paint cans too. None of the labels remain - they're just all rusty. Sorry to get your hopes up!

Squibb was mineral oil. The little one might have been spices, not sure. And as for the cans even rusted cans can be salvaged, the paint will often be under the rust. But if they're just soup and paint cans then yeah those aren't of interest to anyone. Probably the right age for interesting beer and soda cans though, keep an eye out for the ones with two little triangles punched in the top. Or even for the ones with a cone-shaped top that would have taken a bottle cap, although those are pretty tough to find these days.

Thank you for the info!! The cans do have little triangle holes punched in the top but again they're fairly large and most likely soup. How do you get the rust off? I'm curious now...
