I did that, and when filled to 2 centimeters below the string lip, which seemed like a reasonable fill level, the capacity is just under 1.5 liters. This is close to the 1.37 liters cited by Van den Bossche for the French magnum wine he shows on plate 180 of his book. I'm pretty sure this is a very early bottle, in any event I'm pleased with it. That was a good yard sale; a very rude and pushy antique dealer got a ton of stuff for $125 that was worth way more. He was a jerk, but he knew what he was doing. I was tempted to start out-bidding him just for spite, but I probably would have ended up with a 100-year old wheel barrow and a teed off girlfriend for my trouble, so I held my tongue []
