How to dig a still standing privy, you ask? Let me let you in on a little secret... Eat 4 tubes of lipstick (in whatever color you would like to find bottles in... puce usually works best), then when you are ready to go, let them loose in the privy hole as hard as you can. Doing this will magically disintegrate any dirt or non-bottle remnants in the bottom privy layers so that you can easily hop in and pluck out all of the beautifully colored bottles from the bottom of the pit. Works every time! This is the secret to digging a still standing privy and will guarantee you some nice finds. It also works surprisingly well on 20+ foot Philly brickliners. [:D]

All kidding aside, if the thing looks old enough to dig, it should be dug. Wooden shacks usually aren't secured to their footings in any way - just carefully pick the whole thing up & move it(moving tip - screw long 2x4's to each side & use as handles), or just tip it over on its side if it's structurally solid, then put it back after you dig the hole(or if they don't care wher it ends up, leave it somewhere else in the yard). I've only dug one good standing pit in all my years of digging, but it was pretty decent - Pikes peak flask & stuff of that vintage, including a broken puce Dyottville eagle flask...there's always hope...

Rat just wants someone to crawl down in a "fresh one" with the thoughts of pikes peaks and puce eagles running through their minds. At least that will keep the thoughts of poo poo off of their minds, but not off of their pants lol

Did you really find a broken Dyott Eagle in a standing one? If so that would make a good story [:)]

Really did, nice thick 1860's - 70's layer - they installed a flush toilet in the thing probably in the late 1800's, just capped off the layer a few feet down & installed their plumbing. It was a standing brick shack with a concrete floor and a leaky roof, was due to be demolished so we just went through the floor, then collapsed most of the shack into the hole when we were done, lot was plowed off & sprouting new condos a few weeks later[:'(]
