This was found in the area of some of the bottles I have posted recently. Whats its use and how valuable could it be? Notice the crack. Also the handle was broken off and not found with it.

Oooh, it hurts my eyes to see it damaged. You have an 1800's ovoid stoneware jug with cobalt slip decoration. I don't know what value would be with the damage, but it's a great find. They were used for just about anything liquid. Does yours have a name or anything impressed in the clay near the neck?

I did a little searching and the cobalt flower on yours looks very much like the comma vining and fuchsia on pieces made by Daniel Shenfelder of Reading PA, but he ran a pottery from 1860's - 1890's and I thought your piece looked earlier to me.

thats some interesting info. I'll follow up by searching some of that info. I have two more jugs and an open canister without the print on it that I can post soon. I posted the printed one here because it looks nice. Assuming it was not damaged what value do these have?

Eric, stoneware can be professionally repaired. But collectors prefer to buy "as found" and then get it repaired if they desire. Your jug still has value as is so I would leave it alone. I've learned from experience not to try to glue it back together or mess with it if I plan to sell because "do it yourself" repair jobs never come out like a professional repair. I once had an Athens stoneware pitcher repaired. It was found under a house and was missing the handle, among other damage. The potter made a new handle, fixed the cracks, filled in the missing pieces and when she was done it looked like it never had damage at all. She's since passed on but I know others must do it. Or, just enjoy it they way it is. Has a lot of history behind it!

these two are from same spot as above. they are very similar to each other. what are they valued? do they have to have that cobalt paint to be real valuable?

Also, the Shenfelder from above has no markings. could that mean it is an older or newer piece?

Neither the canister nor the two jugs have any markings to ID them. There may be something that is less obvious that would help ID them. How about the rings around the mouth of the jugs? they are close to being the same. could that help to ID a maker. also they have a couple marks around the shoulder area that are the same for both of them. I guess that is from the firing process though. I cant remember which it was but when taking the photos, I noticed a hand or finger print in the clay that was glazed over. Could this be someones mark?
