Rick...Watching your vid right now...I think that's a narrow gauge r.r. grade (two or three foot gauge) you and the Badge' are hiking along...The cypress barrel was proboably for the loco...

We were thinking about that Joe. That trail could have been a track at one point. I don't think it was a RR at the time those houses where in operation.Maybe after.
So you think that big barrel was for water for the train?

The "grade" you guys hiked in on seemed pretty level and uniform....(Neccessitys for a railroad)...Also they couldn't go too far without water for steam...That along with the brake shoe and distance in would all indicate a railroad...We have quite a few old settlements that were built along (or grew up around) a rail line...Could well be. All our old wooden oil barrels are made from redwood or cypress...Cool vid.

Did you guys metal detect the trail you where on?
I bet you would find some RR nails.
The barrel most deff held water.
It had to of been a rail road.?
Cool place.
It would be fun digging with you guys, good sense of humor.

Dave is the Metal man,he said he detected some of that road and found coins dating back to the early 1800s and late 1700s. If he ever chimes in I am sure he will tell you about it.[:D]

This old chain probably had something to do with the RR.

If the railroad ran back when those foundations were houses, they would have been mighty close to the train tracks. I think the tracks came later. It must have been a trail first, then a rail line later.
I don't know for sure because I haven't researched it.But I can't see a train running a mere 30 feet from a row of houses.

I guess I will have to start searching for info.

We still have areas in North Jersey today Rick where the tracks are that close, so it's plausible...

Yeah I guess you could be right, but in this case they had plenty of room to choose where to build tracks or houses. 1000s of acres. Why so close.
