RE: L. Harriman Anderson City (Ohio?)

I LOVE BUYING CHEAPER DIRTY BOTTLES EVEN IF IT MEANS SOME CLEANING WORK.

YOU TURNED A $2 BOTTLE INTO ONE WORTH 2X OR MORE VALUE![;)][;)]

Eric,

You think it is from Indiana?

Bottle appears to be pretty early...seam across the base and a rolled lip (I originally thought it was an applied lip, but it looks to have been rolled outwards and then tooled...).

Just a guess. I looked around in my ADD mode this morning and came up with a few things. I couldn't think of an original 13 that used XXX city, Anderson Oh is just a town and Anderson Ind was a fairly large city that made glass among many other things.
No real facts were uncovered at the time.

unfortunately there are a lot of local bottles like this that are very tough to track down.
Many towns have changed names over the years.
Some companies were in business for a short time and never advertised.
Makes it difficult.
Pharmacy bottles sometimes just have a location that is only meaningful to local people.
There is one bottle from here in Frederick that is marked "Mountain City".
It was a nickname for this town at one time but most people wouldnt recognize it today.
Context is a hard thing to recover when researching history.

There are only two actual Anderson City listings in the USA. One is in Georgia, the other in Kentucky. Neither reflects a Harriman as a chemist/druggist in their history.

Just to add to a thought already brought up. I have a hutch from Calumet, Michigan that is embossed "Calumet City." The town was never referred to, as such.

RE: L. Harriman Anderson City (Indiana)

I think Eric was right! I misread the document I originally looked at and I found the following listing:

Leonard Harriman: 1850 Census, Prarie Township, Indiana, listed as a Physician
Leonard Harriman: 1860 Census, Anderson, Indiana, Listed as a Physician
Leonard Harriman: 1870 Census, Anderson, Indiana, Listed as a Physician
Leonard Harriman: 1880 Census, Sterling, Kansas, Listed as a Physician
Leonard Harriman: 1900 Census, Guthrie Oklahoma, Angelina Harriman is listed as widow
Leonard Harriman: 1910 Guthrie, Oklahoma Directory, Angelina Harriman is listed as widow of Leonard Harriman

So I am pretty convinced that this is the guy. He was gone from Anderson by 1880, so the bottle must predate that. He was born in Ohio in 1816. The census lists his worth at $12,500 in 1870, so he was doing pretty well for himself.
