Here is another very rare and very old 1825 to 1835 glass Canadian Mountie type hat popular in Ohio and other parts of the mid west in the early to mid 1800s.This hat was purchased from an auctioneer in Ohio.It is also very small in size making it quite a bit scarcer then a larger counterpart. The hat is a very pale aqua in color almost clear and did not use a bottle mold to attain the shape as it is free blown. The round style of hat points to a very Germanic style introduced to the mid westerner gentleman. The hat is tiny at just under two inches in length an inch and a half wide and an inch and a half tall.It has a very rough pontil mark and has some debris in the glass indicative of the end of day run.

Hey-hey Steve,

You've the finest glass hat collection I've ever seen. But, come on will'ya, that's closer to a Hoss Cartwright Stetson than a RCMP Stetson, any day of the week.

I see what'ya mean about the pith helmetty aspect, actually that was one'atheir first looks, but it's been strictly

since 1900. "The RCMP, or Mounties, are recognized around the world for their bright Red Serge jackets and brown broad-brimmed Stetson hats. The Mounties were formed in the 1870s to police the vast western prairies of the newly formed Dominion of Canada. In fact, the prime minister of the day wanted a police force in the west to help keep our friends south of the border (that means Americans) on their side of it!

Your question refers specifically to the hat, though. Originally, as RCMP uniforms were based on the British model, Mounties wore the taller pith helmets of the military. According to my friends at the RCMP, the force switched to the Stetson sometime in the early 1900s -- and that hat model was actually imported from the United States. And, well, the Stetson stuck!" From Ask A Canadian.
