Here is a company for finding a good topographical map of an area you'd like to dig (for old dirt roads and buildings): www.novacell.com
Also, you should know about GIS Online Maps that are oftentime available on your county website (see picture below of the Belair Settlement that is abandoned and undeveloped).
Lastly, historical city maps are a good way to locate houses that are not longer there, etc.
Novacell has helped me find a good map of the area from 1918 that shows where the buildings were, and are no longer. There is supposed to be an old plantation house here, too!

I also found an old city map, too, but it is too large to show here... I tried.
