Metal Detecting for Old Privies

I have permisson to search a large tract of land where there were a number of old home sites and businesses, but am having difficulty using a probe because of the large amounts of pine straw and close proximity of small pine trees with thorns thrown in for good measure. I have an old Topographical map from 1918 that helps me locate a general area to search, but am wondering if I should use a Metal Detector to help locate old privies since the probe is more difficult to use. I'm about to move forget these three homes or businesses. Any suggestions? -John
