Same dimension 8 lb package going fed ex home delivery (ground I assume) declared value of $100 is quoted on their site at $18.44 if its dropped off, $21.64 if a parcel pick up is scheduled. I didnt realize there was such a big difference! Free boxes or no free boxes seems like usps 'non standard size' packages are a much better deal via fed ex.

And the UPS site shows 22.85 if you ship it, $28.74 to $29.81 if you schedule a pick up (same day or future date) Thats with 'dimensional weight applied' plus delivery confirmation AND $100 bucks insurance.

Not sure how the scheduled 'pick ups' work, I live out in the boonies as well, but thinkin I am going to check into it.

I find USPS cheaper if it fits in their priority mail boxes they give you for free. Besides that as you said fed-ex is way cheaper for large items...
