I've always called these dresser bottles. The owner could put whatever perfume ,oil etc.they wanted to keep handy in thier bedroom. The number on the base corresponds to the ground stopper that was produced at the same time the bottle was. They could match the 2 after they cooled down. Yours is an early one I'd say predates 1860 they made these into the 1880s. I've never seen one in a totally amethystine reddish color very nice bottle!!!

Matt and Phil, Thank you for the info. I am going to put it up on the Auction Block, my next questions would be any Idea on value and more importantly what categorie should I use?

Thanks again

I typically see these items selling for about $15 to $50.
Collectors like to have them complete with stoppers. Yours is an interesting color so that helps. I see them listed under bottles, perfumes, antique decorative glass, no one place in particular.

Thanks again Matt and everyone for your help. I am going to use some of the proceeds from this sale to donate to the forum.

Not having the stopper hurts it. Not sure about prices but I have noticed they go for significantly less without the top. I've never seen one totally reddish, the complete ones I've seen go for around 40-60$ish.

I'd call it a barber bottle as well. If it is Czech it's probably somewhat valuable. Bottles with that type of painting are called Mary Gregory. If you google that, you will find more info.

similar type in the current glass works auction
They call it a barber or dresser bottle. i think dresser bottle would be more correct as it was more likely found on a ladies dresser than in a barber shop. Barber bottles seem to be a different class of bottles although they do share some general features of color and shape.
