nice weather dig

Herd about a dump with some good age to it, so i went to check it out...
The stuff's about 3-4 feet down and i'm finding stuff from what looks like the late 1860's to the early 1890's.
Here's the first thing i found: cute little ink well... with a big crack in the lip. It's camouflaged with the ground in the pic but i'm holding it... so maybe you can see it.

hmmm, interesting.
More digging later: I see a neck sticking out of the side of the pit. What could that be, something nice maybe...

well... it turned out to be pretty... lame. Just a "patent" cylinder, i was hoping for a mineral water bottle... but this is better than nothing.

i found one more bottle that day, nice druggist bottle from columbus. I wanted a columbus bottle... so that made my day worth it.
I returned today before the rain started... to rain to see if i could get a little more diggin in. Found a few bottles, nothing exciting though.. here's the hole from the first day, it's about 4 feet wide by 4 feet deep- good stuff's on the bottom resting on some clay.

today: more digging. Punched into something crunchy, yep, it's a bottle. Ouch.... well maybe it was already busted before i got to it eh?

Ah! Now here's what i've been looking for the whole time, a columbus squat soda bottle. Woo. I hope it's whole!

...and then i got rained on, so my digging is done for now. I walked around a bit to see what else was about the area and i found the newer soda you see in the top right of the picture, i think a gopher dug it up for me...
I found lots of nice chunks in the pit, found a busted up big pickle jar, what looked like a cobalt blue snuff jar, some blackglass piece with some embossing on it, LOTS of pottery of all sorta, some drinking glasses, pieces of squats, lots of old wines... hopefully more digging later this week will produce some whole stuff.

Nice finds, that looks like a good dump! Some stellar age there, I wonder why it wasn't dug out before?
