Actually, Dan, it could be either as we find these into early 1900 dumps as well ! They would have held preserves or pickles etc, the wide mouth making it possible to get the pieces out easily.
Most likely English in origin. I've found a lot of English product jars and this reminds me a lot of the chutney jars. But, others are correct in saying any type of food product really. I always think that for some reason even though chutney jars are probably smaller than other jars. Yours seems pretty large. I've dug some nice glass lids for these jars which are usually embossed with the company names.
Hello DW3000, I like that jar. The thing that seems uinique about it is the heal tap on the bottom corners - regarding your picture of the bottom. This problem was relative to the time laps before the bottle maker, made the final blow. Those bottom corners broke very easily if the bottle was bumped on a counter or table wrong. I couldn't tell for sure but I assume the center dome of the bottom was thicker than it needed to be. RED Matthews
