Delta Digger and i were fortunate enough to be able to dig a privvy on his family's property, it was a long hot day and the flies were horrible! I cant say it was disappointment but it got to the point when ever a nice bottle was exposed we knew it would come out broken, close to 10 glob top Cutters, a cobalt mineral water and some others I'd just as soon forget. anyhow, here is some pictures of the dig and finds

That Ryde hotel key medallion thing is probably pretty good. I did a search and it looks like the only thing there was probably that hotel! There is a successful hotel there now that was built in 1927, so there was probably an older 1800s hotel there in the same area and probably a few houses and maybe a business or 2, so I'd imagine that things from a village as practically nonexistent as Ryde, California would be quite desirable.

Sorry about all the broken heartbreakers :(

RE: privy dig

At least your guys are getting some glass for your hard work. The last four pits we dug sucked, to put it bluntly [:D] We are gaining some good permissions though,I hope those pits are more productive.
Gotta keep on plugging.
I like the bear bottle. CQQL

RE: privy dig

It really wasn't to bad, this town we live in has been known to produce so great western glob top fiths, we found only broken ones. It was a lot of hard work and we did find a few local meds embossed with the towns name that I didn't have, they're in the cleaning stage right now and then it will be time to pick. Anybody know anything on the pharmacy bottle?

RE: privy dig

Nice dig, Nick. Those whiskeys are heartbreaking. The bear bottle is cool, I haven't seen anything like that. Lordbud or Wilkie might be able to help you out with info on the pharmacy citrate. California seems to have a nice selection of pharmacy citrates, and I know that some of them are very tough to find. I have the only citrate bottle from my town that is currently known to exist. Even though it's cracked [], it is still one of my favorite bottles. ~Jim

Yeah, I'm waiting for wilk or lordbud to have a look, there are so many more bottles that were broken that I have already blocked out of my mind, the hole was dominated with dish ware had to have been 4 sets in there!!! From start to finish it was plates, bowls and cups. Above the out house was a layer of trash dating from the turn of the century to about the 20's and above that a 2 feet of fill riddled with chunks of concrete footings and above that was 4 inches of concrete with 6 inches of asphalt on top of it! Sure as hell wasn't no walk in the park. all in all it was a great learning experience, lots of fun!

Great job working that pit Nick. How did you locate that pit under the walkway?
A guy on Maui was selling a cutter awhile back and it sold very high.

What town was that in, Nick, Rio? I dug a Ryde Hotel spoon from a early 1900s pit in Isleton and gave it to my wife's uncle who lives in the tiny community. The hotel fob is a neat find. Sadly, good bottles are often damaged, but common junk survives. It's just the way diggin' goes. Out of all the holes we dug in Rio, only a small fraction had decent bottles in them. Most were crammed with household trash, but that's what the privy was for, except for the most obvious use. It's like that everywhere, not just in your town.

yeah, Mike, its here in Rio, about two blocks from where the Masonic hall was. you actually dug an out house in Isleton????? Get out!!! Or was it just a trash pit? I didn't think the town was that old. We have a few more holes lined up, most are under some type of cover, and some of them could have been dug, but Mr. Buck isn't around anymore to ask. Rockbot, two words: Sanborn, tape measure, ok three.... sort of. Yeah, Caldigr, i know, its just the luck of the draw, my uncle dug more outhouses in this town then he can remember, and he was just one lucky s.o.b. taussig flasks, glob top whiskeys, the list gos on and on..... the guy has one of those collections a body drools over, and it was mostly dug here. anyhow, hopefully more pictures, of more digs soon, and more pictures of the finds
