That ink has a great color to it. It looks like all these bottles are from a similar mold, but with different lip finishes. What state did you find yours in?? My ink was dug near a very old foundation north of Utica, NY. The foundation was stones only, with no mortar and shows up on very early maps. In the same area we also dug a "From the Laboratory of/GW Merchant/Lockport NY" a "Gargling Oil/Lockport NY" and a "Rushton's/Cod Liver Oil/NY". These other bottles were all hinge mold, not pontiled.
baltbottles,
A collection of inks like these would make an awesome display. It makes you wonder how many different colors there are out there.
Happy Fourth of July to all, remember our active duty folks and veterans.
The dimensions you gave for the base with are similar mine is about 1/16 under 2 inches wide so pretty close. All the baltimore ones i've seen have the shared lip rather then the rolled lip like yours. I'd think yours was either a New Jersey piece or closer to where it was found perhaps Lockport Ny. Also the pontils tend to be small and the base has very little kick up to the baltimore examples that I have seen. The only true way of telling would be to hold the two next to each other. Will you be coming to the shupps grove show. If so bring your ink along and I will bring mine for comparison.
I don't think I will be able to make it to Shupp's Grove. A while back I sent Heckler's auction pictures of this bottle for an estimate, and they said auction price would be $500 to $1000 if perfect which it pretty much is. That means your green ones must be right up there in value also. I probably will sell it sometime because I really just collect stoneware bottles. The reason I was digging the area where I found this ink is because we found a broken "DLO & Son" stoneware bottle from NY city. I know this ink was a lucky find and was probably a later throw than the other stuff we found. It was a weird dump with small pockets of 1870's bottles mixed with much newer stuff. We never found a privy but spent a lot of time looking. stonebottle
