This redware crock was dug in Baltimore dug in pre 1840 woodliner this summer. We found only a puff and and open pontil bottle that looks like a London mustard without the word mustard embossed. The crock has an incised band around it. Glazed on the inside and out except on the exterior bottom. It has no seat for a lid. There is a chip on the lip and bottom has a couple of very thin cracks. We weren't able to finish it, here's a list of the artifacts on the first dig.
-round vial clear (either free blown or open pontilled)
-black glass mallet (unfortunately had about a one inch diameter hole in the shoulder. It didn’t have the usual iridescence and should clean up beautifully.
-white clay pipe
-Olive green historical flask shard from the front or bottom part of the bottle. An eagle and KEENE in an oval are visible. I checked McKearin’s book and I think this a Masonic flask from the 1820s.
-Bottom half of o.p. LONDON MUSTARD
-Redware chamber pot shards about ½ of it was there
-aqua o.p. historical flask shards
-redware teapot shards
-About a bucket full of feather edge china, stoneware, redware, black glass shards
We returned to redig it later this summer. Pics of the chinese bowl in the next post.
