I attended the San Diego, California bottle show today and had a great time. It was a one day event, and members were eager to sell. I was like a kid in a candy store and wanted every bottle in the place, but had to keep focused and be selective. I came home with only four bottles, but ones I have been wanting for some time. (Photos to follow) But I think the real high point of the day was meeting Cecil Munsey (Collector and author) who was there as a buyer like myself. He's the gentleman whose 1935 7up bottle I posted in my "Earliest ACLs" thread. He must be in his 70s now, and is one of the friendliest guys you will ever meet. He told me he found that 7up bottle under an old house here in the San Diego area, and that is where he continues to look for bottles whenever he gets a tip on an old house being torn down. He said he is too old now to be stumbling around in the wilds like he used to.
I also met a local collector named Mike Bryant who collects San Diego bottles. Two of my best finds of the day I bought from him. He also had a display (Photo to follow) of some of his rarest bottles and other local memorbilia. I voted his display as "Best of Show." I hope he wins. Speaking of winning, I was just one number off when they announced the raffel winner of a turn of the century Hutchinson soda from a long gone San Diego bottler. Dang! And they said it was worth $150.00 too!
My two favorite bottles that I bought are a pair of "Polar Pak" acls that are San Diego only bottles, and although I was aware of them, I never came across one before today, and lucked out by finding both sizes (8 oz & 7 0z). (Photos to follow) The labels depict a cute little bear sitting next to an iceberg, and were bottled by the long gone Polar Ice Cream Company.
And just as I was about to leave I walked through the showroom for a second time and spotted a bottle that almost knocked me off my feet! I had been keeping my eyes peeled for one all morning, but had resigned to the fact there wasn't one. And then all of a sudden there it was right behind some other bottles I had been looking at earlier. I guess it was a case of not seeing the forest for the trees. It was a 1948 "Sunset" from Burbank, Ca., and the one that new member "TheCaliKid" and I were so excited about earlier this week. (Photos to follow) It has some front label fading and slight rust staining, but a great bottle for only $20.00. The seller is from Los Angeles, and said he has sold several of them over the years, and that L.A. collectors love them, and will pay $50.00+ for one in mint condition, which the seller said is getting harder and harder to find all the time.
Last but not least, I found a white label "Colarootbeer" which was also a topic of discussion I had a thread on this past week. But the great part is that this white label version is also from San Diego. So all I need now is the light green one, and I will have a set. But I have been told that the green one will be extremely hard to come by. Oh well, maybe next year.
Stay tuned for photos to follow on the next five or six pages.
