So if people are making fake bottles of real ones for practice, you got to wonder why they would be practicing fooling people????

I'm confused... How did he get the embossing to come out? Very well done, at any rate... I imagine with practice, this sort of thing could be so well done as to be undetectable.

definitely a scary trend. All the more reason to stick to the local stuff.

This particular bottle wasn't too scary because;

1. He called it a fantasy bottle,

2. He himself says that the work he has done is obvious and apparent if you study the bottle up close.

What would scare me more is if someone got ahold of a pile of original bottle molds and began handblowing new bottles into them. This would create bottles that would be very hard to distinguish from their original counterparts (unless the person was ethical enough to keep track of every one made and carefully label them as commemorative modern examples.)

Mr Martidale is a respectable collector and student of glass.
Constructed bottles like this arent going to fool too many people
but I still recommend permanently marking any items like this.

I think there is more chance fakes/repros would be made by producing molds from original bottles than by using old molds.
Its already been done with things like mason jars.
I think many things keep it from being done more ... there is a significant initial cost, a good bit of skill is involved , the market is limited, and there are many other more profitable ventures.
Even when it is done it seems like the copiers never pay enough attention to the details to create a passable fake. Probably because that isnt usually their goal. Their goal is just to make a period like decorative object. We are just affected because we collect said objects.
