Hey there. I'm so excited I found this forum. I recently purchased this beautiful bottle so that I can use it as an ink well (yes, I just bought a quill as well!) The guy at the flea market said that it is from the 1890's-1900's and that the metal casing was added later. He also said that it would have been used for smelling salts. He had lots of random antiques at his table so I'm not too sure if he knew what he was talking about. But I know you guys would!! Appreciate any year/value estimates (although I have no intentions of selling it any time soon...) Thanks!

Bath salts I think from around 1890, the metal holder is new to me....value is not easy to determine with the added metal holder....Welcome to the Forum.....Jim

I imagine it had a label similar to one like this at one time...

Hello Jillana,

Welcome, and thanks for showing us your new "inkwell." It looks like a TOC smelling salts to me, though its difficult to see with the gilded cage effect going on there. What is the size?

It's a classic smelling salts form.

It measures 3 inches tall (up to the top of the stopper) and 1.5 inches wide.

And might I add that that I've never had such a large amount of quick replies on a forum. You guys are serious about your bottles, that's for sure!

I'm afraid I can't endorse the idea of your using it as an ink well.. the ink could easily glue the stopper in place..
