Decided to go up to the city for a little digging Sunday, got about halfway there when the van threw the serpentine belt, not good. Trying to put one of those things back on is a major pain in the butt, but after twenty minutes or so of annoyance I got it back on and was back underway, although the belt was squealing like a load of teenage girls at a 'whoever-the hot-heartthrob-this-month-is' concert. Not the best start, but gave the guys time to scout around till I got there. The scouting trip led us back to the way north end of town, where few have dug because it's mostly too new, but there are pockets of oldness. This block is on of those - the only hole previously dug on this block had been fairly deep(maybe 14 feet) and extremely wet (it's the one I'm standing in in my profile pic). In fact, every hole I've dug in this area (only three before yesterday) has been deepish with running water in the lower reaches. We staked out a spot behind some long abandoned houses on the other side of the block and found a shared brick cylinder right where it was expected to be - under a mulberry tree, of course. The top was full of sand and clunky foundation rock, but at least the mulberry tree was mostly outside the hole. About six feet down some mid 1880's era bottles started showing, including a rare local Rich Patent Stopper blob top, although the stopper was missing. Just as it looked like it was going to get good, it bottomed out at seven feet - no water, but not many bottles, either. Undaunted, we moved over to the next lot and quickly located the next shared cylinder, this one full of maple roots....

About four and a half feet down in this one, oldish trash started showing, lots of broken ironstone, redware shards, yelloware chamberpot chunks, and broken squats - and then finally a whole one....

The hole turned out to be the same depth as next door, but with two and half feet of chunky 1860's - 70's era layer in it. Alas, almost everything was broken, but it was still fun to dig a real layer for a change...

Here's the stuff I ended up with after the pick. The soda was a fairly common Mcrudden from Philly, the better ones were all broken[:(]

And broken sodas. Some of the better remnants were an M. Sheil Brown Stout from Philly and a Scott from Holmesburg, Pa. The hole was a little older than expected - found a couple broken pontils at the bottom - and the unexpectedly thick layer for a relatively shallow hole was a real bonus. We'll be investigating this area further, methinks[;)]...
