My son and I got out today and went back to dig a pit where I dug one earlier in the week.It was was a real SOB as there was a tree dead center in the middle. It was an oval brickliner about 3'X6' and about 8 ft. deep.We had to dig it from about a 2' wide opening between two large roots. It had been used and dipped for 40 yrs. or so but we ended up scratching out a nice pint double eagle and a cool iron-pontilled cork top canning jar.A couple slicks and a crock rounded out the finds. After lunch we open another brick liner but after about a 5 ft. testhole and TOC shards and no crunch at the bottom we filled it in.We went down the alley and received permission on a nice 40's house and probed out 3 pits.between the fence and the alley. We tore into the crunchiest one and were hitting seeds and 60's shards at two feet.Nothing whole but the glass looked good, after a sandy cap we were in a nice loamy seed layer and some glass. We ended up getting a ton of bottles but most were early smoothbased slicks. We ended up with about a dozen local druggists,a few unembossed pontils including a nice big IP med and an OP sided ink,a turtle ink,5 or 6 waxsealer jars, and 2 stoneware jars.It bottomed out at 8ft..After I started filling the hole I decided to bust through the wall into another pit off to the side.It looked to date to the 75-85 era, ended up pulling out a Doyles Hop bitters and several broken Mischler's Herb bitters.I only scratched around a little before filling the hole.I can't wait to get back and dig this one,it is only about 6 ft. deep and 2 ft. of it is glass.I took some pics of the dig today for giggles,I hope you guys enjoy.I will try to post some more of the bottles tommorrow if I get a chance.Doug
