Hello everyone, this seems like a pretty good place to share my experience. I was metal detecting in the woods behind my house when I came across a small bowl shaped area with the remains of a model T-Ford in it.
Along the sides of the area my metal detector was screaming, so I started digging.
I came to realize that I had come across a place where some people were dumping their trash about a hundred years ago. I dug tons of old tobacco tins and sardine cans and so many broken bottles you could not count them, however some of them did survive.
The more I dug the more bottles and cans came out. I was never into bottles but some of the broken ones were beautiful. There was a huge heavy embossed clear milk jug that was broke in half.....bummer. Anyway here is what a managed to salvage so far.
Some of the markings are
1. Clicqout Club w/ an eskimo on the bottom
2. Listerine
3. whistle
and a few others I still need to clean

RE: unexpected finds

Hey thanks Mike,
I actually have 3 more of the Whistle soda bottles that I pulled out of there. I'm going back in the morning. I'm sure there is more so i'll post again tomorrow night.

RE: unexpected finds

Pulled up about a dozen more this morning. I can't believe this one came out unbroken and unchipped!!!
It says B.P.CO. and a logo with a backwards P and a P in a circle.

Nice digs, Mike. It looks like you found a 1920s to middle 30s dump. The cobalt PP bottle is worth $10-20. The hourglass Whistle bottles are cool, I find them with my town embossed on the bottom. ~Jim

RE: unexpected finds

The PP pill bottles are often misidentified as a poison. They were actually a medicine bottle that I believe contained digestive tablets. I saw one with a label once, but it has been a while. ~Jim

RE: unexpected finds

Thanks Jim, I'll tell ya, I stumbled upon the bottle hobby by accident the other day while metal detecting. This is just as exciting. Before, when I would find one bottle I would just toss it away, but after i found the cache I thought it would be a good idea to look into it.
I saw your website yesterday, your name sort of caught my eye. I bet you've heard that one before!!!

RE: unexpected finds

Today was lid day I guess. is there a calling for these things, I dug six today.
The one on the left has a nice rose or purple tinge to it, the one on the right says A.G. Smalley and CO. Boston and New York.

RE: unexpected finds

Though I don't know how you would sell the lid, besides going to a bottle show or telling about it here or someplace like the Yahoo fruit jar group, the Red book on Fruit Jars appears to say that lightning style Smalley lids are found in clear and aqua and that aqua are scarce so it would be worth something..
