Does this knocking on doors to ask for permission method really work? If so, whats the Success rate? 50/50? More or less? I ask because I know of a old Neighborhood full of old houses from 1830's to 1900. But, Most houses seem to be well kept & occupied. Should I knock? LEON.

P.S. Below is pic of 1830's house.

95% of the bottles on my site are from permissions. Sometimes it works and sometimes it don't. That is the best I can tell ya. [:D] But if you don't try, you wont be digging any privy's unless you got to the big city's and raid construction lots. I have been slacking on going out and pounding on doors,I got a lot of crap going on in life.Hopefully the crap will be on my pants soon from a privy[8D] knock and don't worry about the success rate just do it.

Rick, wasn't it you that made up a flyer of sorts that you gave the homeowner when you asked for permission to dig on their property? I think I saved it somewhere, but perhaps you could repost it. ~Mike

It's a numbers game, the more doors you knock on the closer you get to your goal. Don't over think it or try to second guess what people will say or what they are thinking. You might be surprised as to how receptive and friendly some property owners are.

Good luck.

photos from former digs are a big help. especially before and after photos.

patience and persistence are key...

jim

this place (1852 map ) had five pits in a row. they all had one thing in common.
nothing in them of value..... this is the after photo

Hey Leon.
that looks an awful lot like Milford. If it is, good luck. Milford has been dug and dug again for the historical home tour they have. We dig there for the home tour. The town is not completely dug out, but, most of the people who want their yard dug have it done during the home tour. We talk to a-lot of people about privy digging and show them how to probe. Everyone is very inviting and interested.
