Road tripped to New Jersey last Sunday. Got denied on a couple of permission attempts and we were about to switch towns but tried another area. Caught an owner moving a tenant out and green lighted us for whatever we wanted to do. He said he'd stop back later but just ended up calling to see how we did.
House was 1790-1820 house with a couple of build on's in the rear. The sandy soil made privy finding the opposite of what I expected. Instead of probing for softer ground like in Balto we probed for harder ground. Chris immediately probed out 7 features in the yard. 5 privies and 2 trash pits.
1830-1850 3x4x5
1850-60 barrel
1900 round brickliner @ 5 feet deep
1890's box or barrel
1900 barrel
2 shallow trash pits about 1890 and 1910
There was no logic to the yard. the trashpits were in the middle the two oldest found privies on the right side property line, another in the middle rear, 1 left middle and the brick just outside the rear backdoor.
Pretty sure their would have been an early box or barrel under the additions on the house.
After that the neighbor gave us access to three more pits, 2 from 1850's and 1 with a busted up cast iron bath tub.
Here's 2/3 of the pottery that came out of two of the early holes. Not much that could completely be put back together but it did provide an interesting look into the styles of the person's that lived there up until @1860. They seemed to like oriental designs but there was plenty of earlier red, yellow, iron etc ware scattered throughout
