Dating these Mason jars is a tough one....I can tell you with almost 100% certainty that the CFJ monogram jar in the first photo is
oldest of the two......

Looks to be a quart...and is an early jar....looks to be almost...if not clear...I dont know if that tint in the base is from the table or not...but if in the jar...looks to be greenish.....maybe....1880's...ish....value another tough one...$25 and up...depends on what someone would be willing to pay....CFJ jars are nice.....

The second jar....looks to be a half gallon jar....now these are even tougher....once Mr. Masons patent rights expired...it was open season on these jars....everyone and their brothers made them.....but the thing that gets my attention is that the cross on the front
looks to be unlettered....that is a scarce variety....and again...the base looks to have some color....clean looking jar...as for the value...
another big question....with out having the jar in my hands to see if anything is embossed on the bottom or reverse...or even taking a look
at the lid....again $25 and up....but if the cross is unlettered...could be more....

Maybe someone more in the know about these variations of Mason jars will chime in....

I hope this helps somewhat....

David

I'm sorry, but $25.00 for either of these jars is a pretty optimistic number. I don't like to burst anyone's bubble, but I'd put them both in the $5 range. Granted they are old - both made in the 1880-1890's time frame, but a lot of them were made - a whole lot of them. If they were amber or spot-em-from-a-mile-away blue or green, that's a whole 'nother story. The CFJ logo is for the Consolidated Fruit Jar Company and the cross is the Hero Fruit Jar Company. -Tammy

The hero fruit jar is a light teal color. If you were holding it you can really see the color it doesnt show very well in the pic. the cfjco jar is a green color, or yellow green. Does that make a difference?

I would have to agree with Tammy, in the day you could buy them by the railroad boxcar. Warren

I was once told by a gnarly old jar collector that: "if you can read a newspaper through it, it's aqua". That philosophy has worked well for me.
